How Not to Gain Weight Over the Holidays

The holidays are notorious for adding pounds to our waistlines, but we don't have to stand back and let it happen. We can enjoy the holidays and our svelte figures, too! Here are few tips and tricks to help you enjoy your favorite holiday foods without packing on those extra holiday pounds. As always, this is not a substitute for a doctors advice. Please consult your physician before starting any and all diet or exercise plans. Use these tips at your own risk.

Increase your activity level. You may not have time to spend an hour at the gym everyday, but try to add a couple minutes to your regular routine but don't over do it. Never exercise to exhaustion, but if you feel comfortable, add a few reps to your weight lifting or a few extra minutes to your cardio program. You may want to park in the far lot at the mall, take the steps instead of the elevator, or go for an after dinner stroll instead of sitting by the fire. You may also want to do a few sit-ups during the commercials of your favorite holiday specials, or put on some favorite Christmas tunes and dance with your kids. Every little bit helps.

Increase your water intake. Constant dehydration can cut your metabolism by a third! So make sure you're getting your eight glasses a day of water. Also, try it on the rocks.... Your body will burn more calories as it warms up the water you drink. Try starting each meal with a glass of ice water. This will help you feel fuller before you even start eating, working as a natural and safe appetite suppressant. If having alcohol, alternate ice water with your cocktail. It will save calories - and a potentially embarrassing situation.

Remember that every bite counts! One of the dangers of holiday eating is a little bit here, a little bit there.... Grabbing a Hershey kiss every time you pass the candy jar or a Christmas Cookie every time you walk through the kitchen will fill you up on calories without you even noticing. Instead, save those goodies for when you can really savor them. If you need to munch, try some plain popcorn or an apple. Avoid fast food - it packs on the pounds fast!

If you know you're going to a party later, try to eat sensibly during the day so as not to overdo it all day long. When you reach your party, go ahead and indulge a bit.... But don't go crazy. Savor each bite and enjoy what you're eating, but don't eat the whole plate of cookies.

All Things in Moderation If you make this your motto for holiday eating, you'll be in good shape (or at least stay that way!). Go ahead and treat yourself, but don't over do it. Enjoy your holiday, your holiday food, and your figure, too!
