1) Protein Powder.
Add protein powder into soups and other foods. You can make protein shakes and try to drink them twice a day. Walmart is now selling good protein powders if you do not have a vitamin store, GNC, or any other type of health food store in your area.
2) Nut Butter and Seed Butter.
When you are dealing with cancer, you may not have much of an appetite, but if you can try to eat a Sun Butter or Almond Butter sandwich at least once a day or on crackers, it will help give you protein and calories.
3) Add seeds and nuts to food like salads or try to snack on shelled sunflowers or pumpkin seeds.
4) Avoid all alcohol.
The cancer patient and the cancer patient in remission should avoid alcohol. Your body's immune system is compromised during this time and alcohol will steal all the nutrients from you.
5) Omega 3- Fish Oil
Fish oil has been showed to halt weight loss in cancer patients and people recovering from cancer.
6) B-12 injections
B-12 will help with gaining energy back. . B-12 has also been shown to help with ones mental state and with depression.
And finally, try to stay as positive as you can. Your attitude and your willingness to fight will make a big difference in beating your cancer.
Weight Gain Smoothie For The Cancer Patient
1 cup of rice milk or almond milk
1 cup of ice
1/4 protein powder
1 tbs. of flaxseed oil
2 tbs. cocoa powder
2 tbs of almond or sun-butter
1 banana
Put all ingredients into a blender. Drink immediately
You can also add powdered milk into this recipe as well. It will add more calories.
Another recipe that I found to help with adding protein to my diet while I was trying to gain weight back after cancer was a white bean salad. It is packed wih protein and calories.
White Bean Salad
1 can of white beans of your choice-drained and rinsed
1 cup of chopped fresh Italian Parsley
2 fresh tomatoes or 1 cup of canned tomatoes/stewed tomatoes (fresh tomatoes are much better for this recipe)
1/2 red onion chopped and minced
juice of 1/2 lemon
2 tbs. of balsamic vinegar
1/4 tsp. sea salt
2 tbs. extra virgin olive oil
Add all ingredients in a large bowl. Chill for about 1 hour
